I have some more exciting news, one of the community projects I have set up is called “confident children” and as part of the project I teach the children aged 5-11 money management skills. Of Budgeting, cash flow forecast, savings, Investment, use of credit cards, spending, working as and entrepreneurial skills.

The children are given a budget and told to use it to organize an event. The children are told that they should not spend more that what they are given and I also give a prize to the group of children who come up with the best idea of how to spend the money within the budget.

This children love doing this and one of the children aged 10 will be featured in the Barclay’s bank monthly magazine, where he will be sharing his views about savings, use of credit cards and other money matters. I feel extremely proud of this.
During the next half term project, the children have come up with the idea of buying T-shirts for 75p, they will then design the T-shirts and sell them for £3, they are also going to design some baseball caps, and headbands. I have also co-produced a song “I am a confident child” which the children will be able to sing and dance to in a promotional DVD we will be producing. We will then sell these in a fundraising event we are organizing on the 10th of April.

The feedback I get from the children and the parents have been very good as the skills they learn help them also in their school work. I have also now teamed up with a company called money smart kids as they have very good resources which I use to teach the children.

As ever, I am now wondering how to develop this idea further, perhaps by setting up a trading company wiith the aim of selling products such as T-shirts etc with inspirational messgages for children and then developing the courses to sell to schools etc!. So please feel to give me suggestions, Thank you in advance. .

PS I have also delivered a few one day taster courses for orgnisations based on my last course "bookkeeping skills for the unemployed"

I am also doing the mile for sports relief on sunday and if you would like to sponsor me go to http://www.mysportrelief.com/gennyjones?SID=103134

Re: Teaching Primary School Children about money

Hello
Yes I have had quite a success with this and it is now part of the holiday and half term projects we now run for children. I also teamed with a company called Money Smart Kids as they have materials which we can use without reproducing new once. We have received funding from the local authority and other funders.

For this summer the children have decided to work on a newspaper called “confident kids daily" and they are going to raise funds by getting companies to advertise their services in the newspaper. We have got the local press and radio helping the children with this, and it means they are learning so many skills too.

I get paid by parents who want me to do one-one money management skills their whole family, and a recent development is coaching young people who want to set up their own business. I work directly with organisations that work with children also, which means they can pay me directly to do the work I am doing.

My greatest excitement is the next project “ Confident Children mean Business” as the aim is to teach children how to set up and run a real business, this should start in January next year.

I am than happy to share my experiences and help you set up something similar in your area

Re: Teaching Primary School Children about money

You deserve a pat on the back.
In our current climate parents are talking about money more so than before because it affects our lifes. Sadly money talk is not open enough even taboo.
Being in business, making money is not an evil. Kids love this idea and it increases their confident working in a 'business' team.

Re: Teaching Primary School Children about money

I love your idea. I think teaching kids about money is something a lot of parents overlook, we tend to spoil our kids even when it comes to money. Thank you for people like you who teaches kids how to handle money properly and preparing them for their future.
