Hi all

It must be very difficult for accountants and other business owners to keep up with all the technology changes over the last few years.

Many of you must be comparing the traditional server-based / computer-based software programs with the emerging web-based / SaaS / Cloud Computing programs.

What would be your main consideration to opt for one or the other in the future? (total cost of ownership, security, control, flexibility, compatibility, continuity, ease-of-use, broadband speed, etc)

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I do prefer web-based software programs since they have high security features offered by most reputable software providers online. It will also lessen the cost in buying servers and internet service.

Depends. Web based accounting software is a popular option that has been gaining a lot of traction over the past few years. However if you compare with server based programs/desktop, it lacks in speed & reliability. I think for a small business this web-based solutions work great but it’s not the way to go if you need quick answers.

I prefer web-based accounting software as it easier for the accountant to access the information he needs. I also find it easier to check the accounting treatment of transactions remotely rather than visiting a clients office. There are a number of good web-based providers out there.

I think there are pros and cons for both. I think the web software is trill improving in terms of speed, reliability and security but I think for sure it will become more and more popular with companies as the years go by.
