Any tips for a new business

Hello people

I am planning to start a new business as a bookkeeper in a few months. I really wanna get this right though so I want to ask you all if you were starting out as a new business what would you think about? What do you feel is important to know? And what might you do differently?

These are things I reckon people that have only been through it before can probably answer. I've been studying, and read a few books but I don't expect I know most of the surprises that may be in store for me!

I'm sure there's a lot more but what I've found really important to me is confidence.  It's just realising you know what you trained to do, and what you've experience doing. Leave the bits you don't know to someone else or learn them, but absolutely have confidence in what you do as clients seem to pick up on this very quickly!

Re: Any tips for a new business

I'm probably not best placed to advise as I'm in a similar position, but here goes anyway.

Set boundaries and stick to them. In particular, price yourself fairly and don't be bullied.

I've been lucky enough to associate with others who are able to support me as I establish myself. I wonder if you are able to do same?

Where are you based?

Re: Any tips for a new business

For me the single most important thing is looking after my existing clients.

I always treat them with the utmost importance, as my reputation relies on it and I find it much easier to retain an existing client than get a new one!

Re: Any tips for a new business

Thanks ppl, some great starting tips!

Confidence would definitely have to be a concern. I'm not worried about bookkeeping or anything, just the other bits really such as quoting, forming contracts etc etc.  I'm still a bit unsure if I will just look for normal clients or if I might take on short-term or part-time contract work to get going. Something I'm thinking about still.

The boundaries is excellent advice, thanks SJB!  It's not really something I would have thought about myself, but I guess once you start going through that stuff it might be a bit more obvious.

When you say associate yourself, do you mean with friends that support you or with other businesses?  I reckon maybe both, I don't know too many business owners or managers though but if I do some contracting work I might be able to sort something.

I between places a little at the moment, half living in Bournemouth and half in Bristol (personal stuff). I really wanna stay permanently in Bournemouth but other things are pushing me more to Bristol. I've a bit of time before I really need to decide so we'll see what the next coupla months brings.

Whatever I do, I'd always think of looking after my clients. Mostly I'd want to start the business so things are a little more flexible and I have a bit of control over my life and work.  I'm not thinking of growing it any bigger than just myself but maybe in the future that will change.

Thanks again everyone!  Any more first time tips?
